Mounds of spices for sale in a hanut. Prices given are dirhams per kilo.
Finally, if you know how much you want by looking at what’s on the scale but don’t know the weight, you can say ‘a little more’ (French ajoutez un peu, Arabic zid shwia) or ‘a little less’ (enlevez un peu, nqs shwia).
REGISTERING WITH THE POLICE
So, you’ve found your house, filled it up with pleasant objects, got the electricity and water flowing and now you’re ready to kick off those yellow slippers, put your feet up on the round dining table and relax with that cup of mint tea. Not quite yet! As a foreigner in Morocco, you are required to carry an identification document called a carte de séjour, or residence card. You must take care of this by the end of your first three months in Morocco, but the sooner you do it, the better.
If you live in a city, the central police station (Sûreté National) normally accepts applications. If in the country or a village, go to the gendarmerie. You will need to take:
8 ID-sized photos
A DH 60 tax stamp
Your passport
Your attestation de travail
Some proof of your residence, such as a copy of your lease or a utility bill with your name on it
The completed application forms
An attestation de travail is a government ministry-issued document stating that you have an official job in Morocco. Your employer should supply this to you. More information on tax stamps is found later in this chapter. Precise requirements for the carte de séjour may change from time to time, or may even vary in different parts of the country if officials are not properly informed or up-to-date about what is required. So you will do best by making two trips to the police station, the first to obtain the forms and find out everything that you’ll need, and the second to turn in the application. Once submitted, it takes two to three months to obtain the carte de séjour. During that time, your passport, combined with the receipt for your application, serve as your identity. Therefore, it is essential that you request and get a receipt when you put in your application.
